Firearm Training Classes Receive Overwhelming Response

Last week, we told you about a new free firearm training class being offered by the Lavonia Police Department and the District Attorney’s office.

The two-day seminar and training will cover a number of topics on the proper use of a firearm in Georgia, including current state gun laws as well as live firearm training at a firing range.

Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle says the response to the class has been tremendous.

“It’s been an overwhelming response and the first class is full,” Carlisle said. “We have set up a second training session for May 6 and 7. Those who are still interested, you can call and make a reservation. Once we have filled up the May session, we will schedule another training session so any citizen who wants to attend a training class, will have the opportunity to do so.”

The first two-day training takes place in March.

Carlisle said the the first day of the class will cover the gun control laws in the State of Georgia.

“The Friday evening course will be classroom instruction presented by Lavonia Police officers, District Attorney Parks White, and Chief Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Fogus,” Carlisle explained. “The class will go over laws regarding the possession of firearms and other laws as they pertain to firearm possession and use.”

Also speaking the first day Carlisle said will be Franklin County Probate Judge Ken Eavenson who will talk about how to apply for a concealed weapon carry permit.

The next morning, participants will get hands on training on firing a gun at a firing range with Lavonia police firearm instructors.

Carlisle said the seminar and firearm training is the result of numerous requests from local citizens.

Carlisle said he aware that the May seminar will be taking place on the same weekend as the Lavonia Spring Festival.
