Extended Meals Program for Students Starts Today in Franklin County

Franklin County schools will be handing out a week’s worth of meals for students today as part of their extended meals program, which was to have ended last week.

The Franklin County School system is extending its meals program through the end of June. School Board members approved the extension at their regular meeting earlier this month.

At the time, Forrer announced the meals program would be continued this week, and the weeks of June 2, 9th, 16th, and 23rd.

Forrer said the additional food giveaways will not cost the school system anything extra.

“This will not cost us anything locally,” Forrer said. “Federal Nutrition will pick up the cost of the meals and the nutrition workers. And we received some federal grant money that will cover any extra local costs like transportation. For no local cost and putting out 100,000 meals, I think this will be a good thing for our children.”

Forrer said last month that the meal distribution program has been going so well they had to set up an extra serving station to hand out the meals to parents.

On their Facebook page, Forrer reminded parents they are providing five days’ worth of meals once a week.

There will be 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches served.

All of the same sites will be operating except for the Emmanuel College site which will be closed starting today.

Meals are for any child 18 years old & under and the child must be present
