In Elbert County, a pair of undercover  alcohol buys conducted over the course of two separate days, has nine Elberton businesses facing fines from the City of Elberton for selling to minors and not checking ID.

According to Elberton City Marshall Allen Lee, controlled buys took place at several locations on October 29th and November 13th, which resulted in numerous businesses violating the city of Elberton’s Alcoholic Beverage Ordinance.

Representatives from six of the nine violators attended a public hearing held Monday evening.

They included Walgreen’s Location Manager William Enger, who apologized to the Elberton City Council for the actions of one of his employees.

Also addressing the council was Lamar Rousey, Store Director for Bi-Lo, who said I.D. checking will be something kept fresh in the mind of his employees.

Other businesses that were in violation included Circle K, Edwards Package Store, Elberton Shell Hop In, Exxon Tiger Mart, Bill’s Minit Mart, Wal-Mart, and Kenny’s Corner.

This was the first offense for all of the previously mentioned businesses, and as a result a fine of $300 as well as a $250 bond forfeiture has been issued to all nine businesses.

The Elberton City Council approved the issuance of the fines and bonds with a 4-1 vote, with councilmember Troy Colquitt voting in opposition of the penalties.
