Early Voting for Lavonia City Council Seat Ends Today

Early voting for the Lavonia City council Post 1 seat ends today.

Early voting began May 25 at the Franklin County Board of Elections and Registrations office in Carnesville.  Elections Supervisor Gina Chappalear said, as expected, early voter turnout has been low.

“We had 20 come into the office to early vote and I have sent out 12 absentee ballots,” she said Thursday.

Early voting ends today at 4:30p.

Only two people are running in the special election to fill the seat left vacant by the passing of Councilman Don Canady in April.

Courtney Umbehant and Nora Chambers are vying for the seat.

Chambers is Vice-president and Branch Manager at Athens First Bank & Trust in Lavonia. She also serves as the Chair of the Lavonia Downtown Development Authority.

Umbehant is the Managing Director for the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home. He also serves as chair of the Lavonia Planning and Zoning Commission.

The Special Election will be held Tuesday, June 16. Voters will cast their ballots at Lavonia City Hall next Tuesday from 7a to 7p.
