Dumpsters Coming to Lavonia Springview Heights Community

The City of Lavonia will be placing roll-off dumpsters in the Springview Heights community beginning next week.

“Beginning next week the dumpsters will be at the Spring St. Park and that will be throw-away for people to clean up their properties,” said Mayor Courtney Umbehant at Monday’s City Council meeting.

Umbehant said the dumpsters will remain at Spring St. Park until they’re not being used anymore.

He said they will then be moved to another part of town.

“Rather than having a clean up day like we’ve done the last few years, we’re going to have some clean up cycles. We’re going to h ave those dumpsters placed in different places,” he explained. “As we are really ratcheting down on code enforcement, we want to take everyone’s excuses away so if anybody gets in trouble they can’t say we didn’t give them every opportunity that we possible could to help them clean up their properties.”

The Mayor and City Council met with residents of Springview Heights in February at a town hall session in the gym at Springview Park.

A number of issues were covered at that meeting including the City’s overall plan to clean up dilapidated neighborhoods and properties throughout Lavonia.

At that meeting, the Mayor not only went over the City’s plans to clean up blighted properties but talked about developing a new code enforcement department to address blight throughout the City.

Umbehant said former City Manager Gary Fesperman is helping the City craft that new department.

“The City of Lavonia does not have a Code Enforcement Department. …Our goal with it is this, to help everybody be able to make their properties better. And I understand sometimes it’s a physical thing. Some people can’t physically be able to do what they need to do to clean up their property. Our goal is not to fine you, our goal is to help you be able to clean it up. If it’s a money thing, we want to work with you and help you find a solution to clean up your property,” Umbehant explained.
