DNR Arrests Man for Baiting and Killing a Bear

The Georgia DNR has charged a Stephens Co man with baiting and killing a black bear.

According to their post on social media, Game Wardens T.R. Dooley and Ethan Franklin investigated a suspicious bear kill in Stephens County earlier this month.

Upon arrival, they located the bait site, behind the suspect’s house.

After interviewing the suspect, he admitted the bear was killed at the bait site. He was charged with killing a bear over bait.  In Georgia, it is against the law to bait bears when hunting.

According to Georgia code 27-3-27, it’s unlawful to use any type of bait to concentrate the bear population in any area or to lure them to any location which gives or might give a hunter an unnatural advantage when hunting bears.

Archery bear season in North Georgia is September 10 – January 8th, primitive weapons season runs from October 15 – January 8, and bear hunting season using firearms runs from October 222 through January 8.

The DNR said the dead bear was seized and the meat was donated to a local charity.
