Deadline Nears for American Legion Scholarship Applications

The deadline is looming for high school students from Hart County to apply for the American Legion 2015 Scholarship.

Scholarships are in the amount of $1,000 each and Hart County Post 109 spokesman Bob Savage says they hope to award up to four scholarships this year to local seniors.

“We’re going to give three that we know of, but there is a possibility of a fourth,” Savage said. “We’re hoping we’ll get some good kids. We have in the past and let’s hope they use it well.”

Deadline to submit an application for the scholarship is April 15th.  Savage said a team will then review the applications and judge them on several criteria.

“We pick five different judges every year and we try to keep it as fair and balanced as we can,” he said. “The judges get about 8 to 10 days to study the applications, the letters from teachers or employers, their essays and we look at their grade point average. We also give some weight to what the family says about their financial situation.”

Other criteria include personal attributes as demonstrated by extra-curricular activities, work history and patriotism.

The student applicants will also be required to write a short, 300 word or less essay on a designated topic of American History.

Any high school senior living in Hart County is eligible to apply, but does not need to be attending Hart County High School.

Savage said several seniors who live in Hart County actually attend Franklin County High School, others are home schooled or go to private school.
