Deadline for Lavonia Mural Art Contest is Monday

The winning design will be painted on the back of City Hall overlooking the new splash pad

Monday is the deadline for local artists to submit their designs for a mural that will be painted on the back of Lavonia City Hall.

The Lavonia Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is sponsoring the contest for all artists to contribute their designs for a mural that will be overlooking the new splash pad located in Lavonia City Park, according to DDA Director Barbara Busby.

Busby said they came up with the idea of holding an art contest after the success of the City’s artist logo contest several years ago.

Busby said they hope to have the mural complement the new splash pad but they have no specific design in mind.

She said the DDA is leaving that up to the artist’s imagination.

The DDA is open to all types of designs but Busby said they prefer an emphasis with a whimsical feel incorporating nature, the lake or water, and the Lavonia logo.

“It can be anything that people come up with. We’d like to keep it in natural colors because it is in a park setting, and maybe relates somehow to water because it’s a splash pad or the lake because we are so close to Lake Hartwell,” she said.

The winner will receive $500, the second place will receive $200, and the third place $100. The winner will be announced on March 6, 2023.

Participating artists may email their design entry or entries to [email protected], or mail them to Lavonia Downtown Development Authority, 1269 East Main Street, Lavonia, GA 30553, or drop them off at the Lavonia Welcome Center.
