The Lavonia Clinic has named its 2014 recipient of the Margaret Ayers Award for Civic Health.

He is Lavonia city councilman David Howell.

In making the announcement at a special reception Thursday evening at the historic Lavonia Train Depot, Dr. Jonathan Hall noted Howell is known in the community for his tireless volunteer efforts.

“This year’s winner meets and exceeds all of the nomination criteria,” Hall said. “He has been a resident of Lavonia for many years. He’s always helpful and available to others. He’s a member of Lavonia Methodist Church where he drives the church van and sings in the choir.  He’s a member of the Methodist Men and builds ramps for handicapped and disabled senior citizens. He’s a Boy Scout troupe leader and has helped many achieve Eagle Scout. He’s a Lavonia City Council member where he is the steward of the City’s budget.”

Hall said Howell is also a member of many civic organizations, such as the Masons and Lions Club.

After receiving his award Thursday, Howell said his nomination and selection came as a complete surprise.

“It’s a shock,” he said. “I sure do appreciate this.” 2014 David Howell2

Howell said he wondered why so many of his friends were telling him this week he had to be at the Thursday night awards reception.

“I should have known something was happening because Priscilla said, ‘David, you have to go to the Margaret Ayers award.’  Jim said, ‘You have to go to the Margaret Ayers award and I’ll pick you up at 5:15p.’  Margaret said, ‘You have to go to the award.’  But anyway, I appreciate it and thank you all.”

The Margaret Ayers Award for Civic Health is in its 11th year.

The award is presented each year to the Lavonia resident who demonstrates outstanding civic leadership, exceptional character, appreciation of Lavonia history and who brings credit to the city.
