Commander of New Hart County GSP Post Named

Construction continues on the new Georgia State Patrol Post in Hart County and now the head of that new post has been announced.

That’s according to newly appointed GSP State Commander Major Tommy Waldrop.  Waldrop said the appointment to the new Post 52 in Hart County will also mean changes at other posts.

“Sgt. Al Whitworth will be the new Post commander in Hart County,” Waldrop said. “Chad Johnson, who is the Post Commander in Gainesville, will be the new commander in Toccoa.  Captain Keith Canup will take my place here in Gainesville as Commander of Troop B. He’s a Habersham County resident.”

Whitworth is currently the commander of the Troop B Toccoa Post.

The new post is located in the Gateway Two Industrial Park off SR77 at Exit 177.  The location  will provide troopers with easy access to the Interstate when responding to calls and also to motorists who need assistance from the state patrol.

Post 52 will cover Franklin, Hart, and Elbert Counties.   Waldrop said the new post is expected to open sometime in the fall.

“They’re saying probably sometime in early October,” he said. “Everything is on schedule and going well. So, as soon as we can get it finished, we’ll get it open and running.”

Post 52 when completed, will be staffed with 14 sworn personnel and a civilian employee.
