Collins Praises Supreme Court Ruling on Voting Rights Act

U.S. Congressman Doug Collins (R-Gainesville) is calling Tuesday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the Voting Rights Act of 1965 “exciting news” for the country.

The Gainensville Republican said the decision quote, “gives equality to every American in the way we elect our leaders and civil servants.” End quote

The high court ruled that a key provision of the landmark law cannot be enforced unless Congress comes up with a new way of determining which states and localities require federal monitoring of elections.

Collins said coming from one of the 15 states that has been impacted by this provision of the 1965 legislation for almost half a century, Tuesday’s landmark ruling is encouraging and uplifting for the future changes Congress can make to ensure fairness to every single person who comes to the polls on election day.

Meantime, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp said in a prepared statement, “Georgia and the rest of the nation have made tremendous progress in the past 50 years.  In recognizing that the current formulation for protection in Section Four of the Voting Rights Act is outdated and obsolete, the Supreme Court validated this progress today.”

Collins said Congress must find a way to come together to make smart decisions for the wellbeing of U.S. citizens and rework the current formula to get it right.
