City of Lavonia Schedules Clean-Up Day For Early November

A second Lavonia Clean-Up Day is set for Saturday, November 6 at the City Shop on the corner of Bear Creek and Allen Farm Roads.

Lavonia Mayor Courtney Umbehant and the City Council came up with the idea of an annual clean-up day last year as an incentive to get property owners to clean up debris from dilapidated and blighted properties inside the city limits.

Umbehant said last year’s clean-up day went better than expected and he said since then, citizens have been asking the City to schedule another one this year.  He said again this year, all debris will be accepted, except for tires.

The Clean-Up Day is for citizens living inside the Lavonia City limits only.

There will be no charge for Lavonia property owners on Clean-Up Day to dump their debris and other trash. Umbehant said this will likely become an annual event.

Meantime, the City has been working this past year with owners of blighted properties in an effort to help them adhere to the new city nuisance ordinance that went into effect in January.

Umbehant confirmed Thursday that three small brick homes on Highway 59 that had been rental properties and had fallen into disrepair are now in the hands of new owners and they have quickly begun work to renovate the houses.

No word on whether the new owners plan to sell or rent the properties.
