City of Lavonia Renews Trash Pick Up Contract With Waste Management

Lavonia trash customers will continue to have Waste Management as their trash service.

The City had been considering contracting with another company when Waste Management’s contract was up.

City Manager Charles Cawthon sent out a request for proposals and only two came back, Waste Management and WastePro.

Based in Athens, WastePro currently services the Athens-Clarke County area, along with Danielsville, Jefferson, Ila, Chateau Elan and Emmanuel College in our area.

WastePro had approached the City Council once before in 2016 but the City chose to continue using Waste Management.

In this latest round of RFP’s, the City Council had asked him to inquire about franchise fees.  He said that idea would mean a higher fee for the City.

The Council had also requested Cawthon to ask Waste Management about customers being able to leave one bag outside the dumpster or trash can.

He said the Company is planning to go to automated trash trucks soon, which will only allow the truck to pick up the trash can or dumpster, nothing else.

After hearing from Cawthon, the City Council voted to renew Waste Management’s contract for three years.
