City of Lavonia Receives GMAC Leadership Award for Wellness Program

The City of Lavonia is being recognized by the Georgia Municipal Association for its efforts to improve the health of its employees.

At their meeting earlier this week, the City Council and Mayor Ralph Owens heard from Lee Richey who presented the City with the GMAC Leadership Award in the category of wellness.

Richey credited Lavonia HR Director Cheryl Humbert with instituting programs and initiatives that have had demonstrated results in employee health.

“She puts on an annual wellness fair where employees complete health risk assessments, they can get tips and tricks on how to improve their health,” Richey said. “She also has a tier-point where employees participate in various things throughout the year where they can earn points and turn those in for prizes, and she’s had remarkable results.”

Richey pointed to the Lavonia Police Department’s and Water Department’s weight loss, get fit campaign where they’ve lost a total of over 285lbs.

Richey says Humbert’s leadership is paying off in the health of Lavonia City workers.

“And you all continue to lead. Cheryl puts on a great program. She makes sure she worries not just about the waistline, but all areas of wellness,” she said. “She brings in not only employees to do training, but brings in other members of the community and really tries to balance out the wellness program.”

Richey presented the Mayor and City Council with a crystal trophy which will be displayed in City Hall.
