Chase Monday in Franklin Co Sends SC Man to Jail

A crash on I-85 Monday afternoon sends South Carolina drug suspect to the hospital and jail

According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Sgt. Ray Dean with Hartwell Post 52, it happened Monday afternoon.

“Monday Trooper with the Georgia State Patrol Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU) attempted to stop a beige 1993 Toyota Camry on Interstate 85 North for various traffic violations,” Dean said.”However, as the Trooper activated his emergency equipment, the driver of the Camry accelerated rapidly and initiated a vehicle pursuit on Interstate 85 North.”

Dean said the Trooper pursued the Camry and conducted a successful PIT maneuver near mile marker 173 to terminate the pursuit. The Camry traveled off the east shoulder of Interstate 85 North and overturned multiple times.

The Trooper and multiple Franklin County Deputies took the driver and passenger into custody.

Both occupants were then transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.

They are identified as 49-year-old Glen Richard Smith, Jr. of Inman, South Carolina, and 34-year-old Krystal Lynn Sykes of Graham, North Carolina.

After being released from Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, Smith was subsequently transported to the Franklin County Detention Center, where he will face criminal charges including felony fleeing and possession of methamphetamine.
