Busy First Month for New GSP Post 52

The new Georgia State Patrol Post hit the ground running shortly after they opened.

Post 52 officially opened in the Gateway !! Industrial Park on January 1st.

And late last week, Post Commander Sgt. Al Whitworth released the monthly statistics for the Post’s first full month of operation.

According to Whitworth, Post 52 troopers investigated 116 traffic crashes during the month of January in Hart, Franklin, and Elbert Counties.

Whitworth said the traffic crashes resulted in 41 injuries and 6 fatalities.

Most of those fatalities took place in Hart County and most involved drivers in their 20s with small children in the vehicle.

Recently, Whitworth joined Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland in stepped up patrols in an effort to curb the number of fatalities on the roads, especially in Hart County.

“I’ve been speaking with Sheriff Cleveland about the fact that there’s been more fatal accidents in Hart County in the last three months than we normally see for the entire year,” Whitworth said. “Again, I echo what the Sheriff is saying to just use caution.”

Whitworth said the causes of the numerous wrecks have run the gamut from impaired drivers, to use of cell phones to driver error.

Whitworth said troopers from Post 52 also issued 826 traffic citations during the month. That total includes 51 arrests for driving under the influence, 9 drug arrests, and 514 citations for speeding.

Troopers also issued 1,113 warnings.
