Body Found Last Week Near Carnesville Identified as Missing Athens Man

A body found last Friday by Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies has been identified.

Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas said earlier this week, a compact blue sedan, matching the description of a vehicle belonging to a man missing from the Athens area, had been found in the parking lot of Middle River Baptist Church on SR320 outside of Carnesville  on September 26th.

Thomas said the body was found early on September 27th.

“After a search of the property by Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies and Athens Police, a body was found in a stand of trees on the backside of the property adjoining the church, approximately a mile from the church,” Thomas said.

Thomas said the body was sent to the GBI Crime lab for autopsy and a positive ID.  On Thursday,  Thomas confirmed the body was that of the missing Athens man.

 “The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab has confirmed that the body found last week is that of the missing Athens man, ” Thomas said. “He is identified as Glen Owens, 29 of Athens.”

 Owens had been reported missing on September 24th.

Thomas said Owens died from a single gunshot wound to the head.  He said no foul play is suspected.
