Authorities Close to Arrest in Explosives Case

In Stephens County, authorities are getting closer to an arrest in connection with a suspicious device that was found last week in Toccoa.

The device was discovered by a passerby on the the side of Tugalo Street last Friday.  That person immediately called 911.

Stephens County Sheriff’s deputies took the device to a safe location and the GBI bomb squad was called in for assistance, along with the K-9 detection unit from Rabun County.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said Thursday, his investigators now have a what they believe is a good lead.

“We have subpoenaed the video records of a local business in Toccoa. We hope to identify an individual out of Rabun County that possibly purchased some of the pipes at the business” Said Shirley; “We are working with Rabun County authorities on an individual they have identified there. The investigation is continuing and leads are promising. There could possibly be an arrest in the coming days.”

So far, Shirley has not said whether the device was in fact a bomb.  WLHR News will continue to follow this story and bring you more information as it becomes available.
