Arrest Made In Officer-Involved Shooting

An arrest has been made in last week’s officer involved shooting in Carnesville.  According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 31-year-old Richard David Travis of Eastanollee was the driver of the SUV in the officer-involved shooting.  Travis was arrested late last week and charged with aggravated assault upon a peace officer.  According to Franklin County Magistrate’s office, bond was denied at Travis’s first hearing on Friday.  The suspect remains in custody at the county detention center.

It all stems back to Monday, February 28, when the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation into an officer involved shooting.  Preliminary information indicates that on the evening of Sunday, February 27, a Franklin County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw an SUV break several traffic laws.  The deputy attempted to make a traffic stop along Old Federal Road near Plainview Road in Carnesville.  The SUV did not stop and lost control causing the deputy’s car to hit the SUV and become temporarily disabled.  The SUV then turned around in a driveway as the deputy was getting out of his car to approach the SUV.  The SUV then drove toward the deputy and the deputy shot at the SUV several times.  The vehicle left the area, and the deputy was unable to pursue it.  The deputy was not injured during the incident.  The SUV was found by a citizen at approximately 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1.  The vehicle was found abandoned and recovered by the Franklin Sheriff’s Office.  Once the investigation is completed, the resulting case report will be handed over to the Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s office for review.
