Arctic Air Bringing Record Cold to Our Area Tonight

ice storm 2015eThe ice and sleet may have moved out of our neighborhood, but forecasters say the frigid cold is here to stay for at least the next several days.

High winds this afternoon will bring us temperatures overnight tonight dipping into the teens and according to meteorologist Andrew Kimball with the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, that is going to bring some pretty significant wind chills.

“We’re expecting near record-breaking low temperatures tonight,” Kimball said. “Temperatures will dip into the teens and single digits. These temperatures will be accompanied by strong winds. Wind chill factors are expected to bottom out in the zero to five below range tonight.

Kimball said expect temperatures today to not get much higher than the mid-30’s today, but then by 6p this evening, temperatures will be in the 20s and continue to drop.

Kimball said this arctic air mass is not expected to move out before the weekend.

“The center of the arctic air mass will settle into the area Friday,” he said. “Friday morning, temperatures will be similar to Thursday morning. Highs on Friday will be in the lower 30s on Friday.”

And by Friday night, we have a good chance of seeing some of that white stuff everyone (well not me) has been hoping for.

“The model guidance is still hinting at another system developing to our west, which is expected to move into our area Friday night,” Kimball explained. “And we’re still going to be pretty cold, so if we do start seeing precipitation, it’s going to be snow. We could see some accumulation by Saturday morning. That will transition over into sleet and freezing rain by Saturday afternoon. And that should change over into all rain by Saturday night.”

By Sunday, temperatures should be back into the 50’s.  Of course, stay with 92.1 for the latest on the weather and road conditions on the air, on our Web site and on our Facebook page.
