American Flag Flown in Kabul in Honor of Lavonia Police

Inside the Lavonia Police Department an American flag now hangs that recently flew over an Army base camp in Afghanistan.

Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said the family of Sgt Jonathon Wight recently presented his department with the flag.

“A number of years ago, we became friends with a young man who lives here in Lavonia by the name of Jonathon Wight,” Carlisle explained. “We were able to watch Jonathon as he grew up into a fine young man and made a choice to join the Army National Guard.”

Sgt. Wight raised the flag and flew it on April 3rd at Camp Phoenix in Kabul in honor of the Lavonia Police Department.

Calling it an unexpected honor, Carlisle said the flag, along with a proclamation, was framed and presented to the department last week.

“I can’t say how much of an honor it is to have a young man from Lavonia who is fighting for his country in Afghanistan think enough of us to fly a flag in our honor,” Carlisle said.

Sgt. Wight serves with the Army National Guard.  He has been in Kabul since last November and is expected to return to the States in July, according to his parents.
