80th Annual Elberton 12-County Fair Kicks Off Today

In Elbert County, the 80th annual Elberton 12-County fair kicks of today.

The fair runs through Sunday and will include many of the annual favorites, such as the Carnival Midway, Big Time Wrestling, the Elberton Idol Contest, and the BMX Stunt Show every night.

For the 9th annual Ultimate Elberton Idol Contest, contestants will audition on-air on the morning show on our sister station, WSGC 105.3 for the right to perform during the preliminaries at the fair on Tuesday night.

Finals will be held on Saturday October 12th.

One change this year, however, has to do with parking.

Special Operations Officer Macon Clark with the Elberton Police Department says the Georgia Department of Transportation has made the area on North Oliver Street in Elberton, from Clairmont Avenue to Elmhurst Drive a no parking zone.

Clark said the change is to add an extra measure of safety for pedestrians.

“It’s a safety concern, I know a couple of years ago we had an incident where some children had gotten hit, and that raises concerns for us because we are out there to keep everybody safe so they can have a good time,” said Clark.

“There will still be a ton of foot traffic, as the fair draws a pretty big crowd each year”, he explained. “So, please still exercise caution when driving through that area.”

Also this year, judges will crown the 4th annual “Miss Elberton County” and “Little Miss Elberton County” winners.

Winners of age divisions will receive great age appropriate gifts, an Embroidered Sash and a Large Trophy and Crown.

In addition to the rides, the contests and the midway, there will be some good old fashioned country fair exhibits, such as prizes for the best homemade jams and jellies, and other home made or home grown goodies.

There will also be lots of arts and crafts booths with local items for sale.

The fair serves 10 northeast counties in Georgia as well as two counties in South Carolina.
