Qualifying Ends Today in Lavonia City Council Post 1 Race

Qualifying for the Lavonia City Council Post 1 seat ends today at 4:30p.

The Post 1 seat was vacated with the passing of Lavonia City Councilman Don Canady earlier this month.

Canady had two and half years left in his term so a special election must be held.  So far, two candidates have come forward to throw their hat into the ring.

They are local banker Nora Chambers and Strickland Funeral Home managing Director Courtney Umbehant.

Chambers is Vice-president and Branch Manager at Athens First Bank & Trust.

In addition to his position with Strickland Funeral Home, Umbehant is an ordained bishop with the Church of God and serves as chair of the Lavonia Planning and Zoning Commission.

The qualifying fee is $35 and is paid at Lavonia City Hall.  Voters will cast their ballots at Lavonia City Hall on June 16th from 7a to 7p.

Early voting will begin May 27th and run through June 12th at the Franklin County Board of Elections Registrations office in Carnesville.

Anyone who wants to vote in the special city election but is not registered, may register at the elections office in Carnesville by close of business May 18th.

Should a run-off be required, the run-off election will take place on July 14th.
