2023 Tax Return Deadline is Midnight Tonight

If you have not yet filed your 2023 income tax return you have until midnight tonight to do so.

The Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) began processing individual income tax returns on Wednesday, February 1 and expects more than 128.7 million individual tax returns to be filed by today’s tax deadline.

The IRS has already received more than 100 million tax returns, with tens of millions more expected to be filed by the midnight deadline tonight.

For taxpayers who need an extension of time to file their taxes, there are several options to get an automatic extension through Oct. 15.

Although an extension grants extra time to file, it does not extend the obligation to pay taxes due on April 15, 2024.

To avoid penalties and late fees, taxpayers who owe should pay either their full tax bill or at least what they can afford to pay by the April 15 deadline.

The IRS estimates that 19 million taxpayers will file for an automatic extension.

IRS Free File became available on IRS.gov on Jan. 12 in advance of the filing season opening.

This tax season, taxpayers saw helpful changes at the IRS following ongoing transformation work.

Some of the new and expanded tools and resources include:

Expanded in-person service by opening or reopening Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs).

Improvements to the “Where’s My Refund” tool.

Enhanced paperless processing will enable taxpayers to submit all correspondence, non-tax forms, and responses to notices digitally and will be able to e-File 20 additional tax forms.

An enhanced IRS Individual Online Account that includes chat, the option to schedule and cancel future payments, revise payment plans, and validate and save bank accounts.

Additionally, the IRS instituted a new pilot tax filing service called Direct File which gives eligible taxpayers a new choice to file their 2023 federal tax returns online, for free, directly with the IRS.

And if you are just now starting to file your tax return, it’s a good idea to e-file at this late date to make sure your return is submitted on time.

If you want mail in your return it must be postmarked by midnight tonight and you should check with your local post office to see what their hours are so you can get your completed, and signed return, into them before they close.
