2021 Tax Filing Extension Deadline Coming Up Soon

If you filed an extension on your 2021 tax return you have until midnight next Monday, October 17 to get it in to avoid the penalty for filing late.

This year, the IRS received about 19 million requests for extensions to file until October 17 and they are urging those who have not yet filed to do so electronically.

But there are some people who have additional time to file.

They include people who are in – or affected by – a federally-declared disaster area may be allowed more time to file.

Also, special deadline exceptions may apply for certain military service members and eligible support personnel in combat zones.

The IRS also has some tips for extension filers to make it easier.

First, make use of their Free File service. There are eight Free File products available in English and two in Spanish online at IRS.gov.

Filing electronically can also help taxpayers determine their earned income tax credit, child and dependent care credit, and recovery rebate credit.

Taxpayers who owe taxes can pay online using IRS Direct Pay at no cost or they may use a debit card, credit card, or Digital Wallet

For more information on filing your return by the October 17 deadline, you can go to the IRS website at IRS.gov.
