Traffic Checkpoint Yields Two Drug Arrests

A weekend road check in Elbert County lands an Elberton man in jail on drug charges.

On Saturday, May 10th a road check was conducted by the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office on Highway 17 North.

Sheriff Melvin Andrews says a vehicle approaching the checkpoint pulled off and two people, later identified as 41-year-old Henry Curtis Hanley of an Edwards Drive address in Elberton and 25-year-old Victoria Rose Smith of a Colbert, GA residence, fled on foot.

“They pulled off when approaching the road check and fled on foot. The female, the officer that was close on her ordered her to stop, and she failed to do so, and he caught her just a short distance from where she jumped out of the vehicle”, said Andrews. “The male, he was located just a little ways from the vehicle hiding in a field, trying to hide.”

The pair was arrested without further incident.  Sheriff Andrews says Hanley is facing several drug charges as a result of the arrest.

“Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent, Possession of Marijuana less than 1oz, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Obstruction of an Officer, and three counts of Possession of Drug Related Objects”, listed Andrews.

Smith is also charged with Possession of Methamphetamine and a misdemeanor county of Obstruction of an Officer.

Both were transported to the Elbert County Detention Center following their arrests where they currently remain in custody.   Bond has been set for both Hanley and Smith.   Hanley’s bond has been set at $25,000 and Smith’s comes in at $15,000.
