Local Humane Societies Seek Volunteers for Weekend Adopt-a-thon

CassieLocal humane societies and animal shelters are coming together this weekend to try to get hundreds of homeless pets into new homes.

Beginning today, the Hart County Humane Society along with the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter will be at Petsmart in Anderson for the store chain’s semi-annual  three-day Adopt-a-thon.

Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter Director Sherri Lockhart said whatever kind of furry friend you are looking for, there promises to be a cat or dog waiting for you this weekend.

“We will be there Saturday from 10a to 3p,” Lockhart said. “Other rescue groups will be there at different times beginning today through Sunday.  So, there will all kinds of pets there for you to choose from Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”

The Hart County Humane Society will also be there beginning today through Sunday and they are in need of  volunteers.

Humane Society president Donna Madkiff is looking for some extra volunteers to serve as “buddies” for adoptable animals at the Petsmart this weekend.

“We need volunteers for each animal so they have a person who can speak for them,” Madkiff said. “Volunteer buddies will show the animal to prospective adoptors and stay with the dog during what can be a very stressful time for them.”

Madkiff said Petsmart Charities offer lots of incentives during their adopt-a-thon for people who choose to adopt a pet.

“Adoptors get coupons off for training classes, crates, toys and food,” Madkiff said.

If you would like more information on how to volunteer, you can contact Donna or the Hart County Humane Society at 706-436-0965 or 706-376-1769.
