11 State Senators Send Letter to Stop Immigration Bill

A group of Georgia’s state senators is urging the state’s U.S. senators to vote “no” on the proposed federal immigration bill that’s under consideration.

The Associated Press reports eleven Republican state senators sent a letter Tuesday to Sen. Saxby Chambliss and Sen. Johnny Isakson, both of whom are also Republicans.

They said it’s necessary to stand firm on securing the borders before addressing other issues.

They expressed concerns about the bill’s ability to: guarantee the security of the country’s borders; provide a fair, equitable path to citizenship and ensure that local governments aren’t saddled with astronomical costs associated with immigration.

The bill cleared an early procedural hurdle on Tuesday, but Senate Republicans say they will seek to toughen the its border security provisions and impose tougher terms on those seeking to gain legal status.
