10 People Killed In July 4th Holiday Accidents in Georgia

It was a busy and deadly July 4th weekend on Georgia roads.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, at least 10 people died in traffic-related accidents over the Independence Day weekend.

One of those deaths happened in Hart County Saturday night at the Hartwell Speedway.

Georgia State Patrol Hartwell Post officer Sgt Webb said a race car driven by John Bohannon of Toccoa broke its steering shaft during the race.

The car went up a wall and through a fence hitting 56-year old Paul Ballinger of Royston, killing him.

A spectator, 22 year old Ricky Hamilton of Danielsville was also injured as was an 11-year old boy.

Both were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Bohannon suffered minor injuries.

No charges were filed against the driver.

Other fatalities over the weekend, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety were recorded in Albany, Atlanta, Brunswick, Cobb, Dekalb, Douglas, Forsyth, Fulton and Washington counties.

Last year, during the Independence Day travel period, 13 people died in traffic crashes on Georgia roads.

The holiday travel period ended at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 4.
