Wal-mart Adoption Event A Success, Says Shelter Director

Some homeless dogs and cats are now in new homes thanks to a successful Mothers Day adoption event in Hartwell last Saturday.

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter, along with Animals Inc of Hartwell set up the adoption event at the Hartwell Wal-mart.

And according to Animal shelter director Sheri Lockhart, it turned out to be one of their best off-site adoption events ever.

Lockhart said Monday most of the dogs and cats they brought to the event found new homes.

“We had a wonderful event. We did 16 adoptions. All but three of the animals we brought got adopted. Those dogs days are numbered so if you’re looking to adopt, please come to the shelter and pick out a new family member,” Lockhart said.

Most of the dogs available for adoption Saturday from the shelter had already been spayed or neutered and were being offered for a lower adoption fee.  Lockhart said interest  in those dogs came from people  from all over Northeast Georgia and South Carolina.

“We had people calling the shelter from Anderson asking if certain dogs were still available and many of those who called actually came to Hartwell from Anderson to adopt,” she said.

Lockhart said her staff and volunteers were extremely pleased with the care and help they also received from employees at Wal-mart.

“Eddie Cheek, the manager at the Hartwell Wal-mart was wonderful. He sent employees out to help us. Then, volunteers with the Hart County Humane Society also helped us walk dogs and clean up behind them. They were wonderful. So it was great event and we were really excited about it,” Lockhart said.

Lockhart said they also raised some $600 in donations Saturday.  She said they hope to be able to hold another Wal-mart adoption event in the near future.
