Unemployment Rates in Georgia Mountains Region Hold Steady

Most of Georgia’s Regional Commissions saw a decline in their December unemployment rates.

However, the Georgia Mountains, Northeast Georgia, and Southern Georgia Regional Commissions remained unchanged from the previous month.

In the Georgia Mountains Region, the unemployment rate stayed at 2.4 percent over the month and was the same as this time a year ago.

Initial claims for unemployment were up 181 in December but down 108 over the year, to 934. The labor force had also decreased by 2,621 over the month but rose 5,168 over the year, to almost 248,000.

Additionally in the Georgia Mountains Region, the number of employed was down just over 2,600 over the month but up 5,098 over the year, to just under 242,000.

The Georgia Mountains Region includes Franklin, Hart, and Stephens Counties.

“Georgia’s success story is nothing short of phenomenal, boasting a blockbuster year with over 5.1 million hardworking Georgians driving our state forward,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “As existing businesses scale new heights and a steady influx of new enterprises proudly choose Georgia as their home, the Peach State appears headed toward continued economic success.”
