TREE TAKES OUT POWER POLE LEAVING OVER 900 GUMLOG RESIDENTS IN THE DARK

It was a typical summer evening in the Gumlog Community when at around 7:15p a large tree toppled onto a power line on Gumlog Rd. snapping the pole in two and taking power and telephone lines with it leaving 980 residents of Gumlog, from Tugaloo State Park Road to Franklin County Boat Ramp Rd in the dark for hours.

Traffic on Gumlog backed up quickly and citizens living near the downed tree spent their evening directing oncoming traffic to stop and turn around.

Hart EMC Crews, Georgia DOT, Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies along with Franklin County EMS, and Franklin County EMT’S were on the scene within minutes. A new pole had to be brought in and the tree cut up and moved away.

Just before midnight, power was restored to the entire area.

In an unrelated incident, just before 9p, power went out in part of downtown Lavonia from West Main to Augusta/Jones St.

Power was out at the WLHR/WEGG studios and we were off the air for a time until Georgia Power was able to turn the lights back at around 9:30p.

The cause of that outage has not been determined.
