There’s More to the Story During National Library Week

This is National Library Week, a time for people to get to know their local libraries and what they have to offer.

National Library Week began Sunday and runs through Saturday, April 29.

Franklin County Library Manager Maggie West went before the Board of Commissioners earlier this month to tell them about National Library Week.

She said this year’s theme speaks to the variety of activities and interests available at your public library.

“The theme is There is More to the Story which is very pertinent now because a lot of people think libraries are just books. We are not. We are books and so much more,” she explained. “We offer free programs for children, teens, adults, and families. We teach and promote a sense of local learning. If you have a library card you can go online and access Ancestry.com for free, you can learn languages for free, and you can access the New York Times for free. We offer so much and we are so excited for everyone to see what we have going on.”

At the national level, the American Library Association is emphasizing a different focus or topic each day of National Library Week.

Today is Right to Read Day, the State of America’s Libraries Report is released, including Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books of 2022.

Tuesday, April 25 is National Library Workers Day, a day for library staff, users, administrators, and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.

Wednesday is April 26: National Library Outreach Day (formerly National Bookmobile Day), a day to celebrate library outreach and the dedicated library professionals who are meeting their patrons where they are.

And Thursday, April 27: Take Action for Libraries Day, a day to rally advocates to support libraries.
