Suspicious Person Forces Lockdown Tuesday at Carnesville Elementary

A Martin man is behind bars in Franklin County facing charges after allegedly coming to the Carnesville Elementary School campus Tuesday.

“Multiple witnesses contacted Franklin County 911 reporting a person who had parked outside the school grounds and walked to the main building,” said Sheriff Steve Thomas Wednesday. “The reports involved a person in a sleeveless shirt wearing what appeared to be a full-hooded demon or devil kind of mask.”

Acting School Superintendent Chuck Colquitt said the person was wearing a devil mask and parents waiting to pick their children up called the school to report a suspicious person.

“Upon receiving the information Law Enforcement and School Administration become concerned about the method of entry onto the premises and the intentions of the hooded-mask person,” Thomas said. “Law Enforcement, along with School Resource Officers, School Security, and Staff members utilized the SOFT lockdown procedure. The lockdown was successfully completed which allowed the zone to be secured until the person of interest could be located.”

Davis was allegedly wearing this mask when officers arrested him

One parent who asked not to be identified told WLHR News they had just picked up one child from the Middle School and were in the car ride line waiting to pick up another student from Carnesville Elementary when deputies descended on the school.

The parent said people in the pick-up line were also in a kind of lockdown for about an hour while deputies searched for the individual.

Sheriff Thomas said during patrol, deputies found the vehicle of interest on Clarks Creek Road where a traffic stop was conducted. Deputies found that the driver of the vehicle still had the hooded mask on.

At the traffic stop scene, Officers were able to determine that the driver of the vehicle was the person who had entered the school grounds.

He is identified as 58-year-old Daryl Keith Davis of Martin.

Davis was arrested and charged with Disruption or Interference with the operation of a Public School.

Deputies did not find any weapons on Davis. It is not known why he decided to go onto school grounds.

He remains in the Franklin County Detention Center awaiting an appearance before the County Magistrate Judge.
