The Franklin County School System has announced Franklin County High School teacher and head boys basketball coach Jason Shaver as their district Teacher of the Year and Elise Johnson, Technology Specialist at Lavonia Elementary School, as the Support Person of the Year for the 2023-2024 School Year.

“Our 2023-2024 Franklin County School System Teacher of the Year exemplifies servant leadership,” said Franklin County School Superintendent Melanie Burton-Brown. “Coach Shaver’s impact on our school community is unmatched. He goes above and beyond the call of duty each day to ensure student success.”

The announcements were made at the school district’s Convocation held Monday, which gathers employees from across the district to kick off the new school year.

Shaver graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Special Education.

He has taught at Franklin County High School for the past 20 years in a variety of subjects and currently teaches US History in the Social Studies department.

Not only has Coach Shaver served on a number of committees during his employment with FCSS, but he has also served as a mentor to new teachers, as well as the Huddle Leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Franklin County High School.

Shaver has been a basketball coach during all of his years in Franklin County and is entering his 9th year as the head coach for the boys’ basketball team.

The Support Person of the Year, Elise Johnson, has been employed with Franklin County Schools since 2013 and has worked to support teachers and staff as a Technology Specialist.

Johnson graduated from Emmanuel College with a Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Communication.

Working in the technology department has allowed her to also attain certifications as a Google for Education Certified Educator Level 1 and also a certified Apple Teacher.

She loves being able to work with teachers and students by taking that technology burden off of them.

Johnson not only uses her skills in the school she also serves at Liberty Baptist Church as their audio and media coordinator.

“Ms. Johnson brings quality and supportive expertise to each technology situation she
encounters,” Superintendent Burton-Brown said. “We are very proud to have Coach Shaver and Ms. Johnson represent Franklin County School System as our Teacher of the Year and Support Person of the Year.”
