Royston Working with Hart Co to Extend Water Line to Vanna Fire Department

The Royston City Council is considering a plan to help Hart County get city water to an area of Vanna where the Vanna Fire Department is located.

At their City Council meeting Tuesday evening, the Council heard from City Manager Sharleen Ayers who said she was recently approached by Hart County Commissioner Joey Dorsey about resurrecting a previous plan to extend a water line in Vanna.

The idea Ayers said, originally came up in 2019 but was never acted upon.

Currently, she said Royston does provide water up to a point in Vanna but not as far as the Vanna Fire Department.

Ayers said the old agreement that was agreed to in 2019 allowed the City of Royston to put in a water line under the railroad track with no charge to the City provided the City allowed the railroad to buy water when they needed it.

Ayers said the railroad would agree to a zero-dollar lease to build the water line extension to get water to the Vanna Fire Department.

She added that the cost to construct the water line would be paid for with SPLOST funds but is now likely more than what it would have cost in 2019.

After hearing from Ayers, the Council agreed to have her staff look into pricing and costs to purchase materials to build the line. They plan to discuss it further at their next meeting.
