Royston City Officials Begin Search for New Police Chief

The City of Royston has begun its search for a new Police Chief.

A job description was published Monday on the City’s website and Facebook page.

Royston Mayor Keith Turman tells WLHR News that as in the case of their search for a new City Manager, the City will take its time to find a replacement for Chief Donnie Boleman who is retiring at the end of the month.

According to the public announcement on Monday, the position is open until filled, but application review will begin on Wednesday, August 21.

Any applications received by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, will be considered in the
initial review.

According to the criteria published, the successful candidate will have a post-secondary education beyond a high school diploma, such as an associate’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, criminology, or related field. However, a bachelor’s or advanced degree is preferred along with a Certified Instructor’s certificate.

Supervisory or management experience in a law enforcement agency is required, generally meaning 5 years of supervising direct reports.

Also required is certification by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (GPOSTC) is required. This certification and its training requirements must be maintained as well as firearms qualification.

Applicants must also meet departmental policy for new hires such as a thorough background check, drug/alcohol screening, medical screening, polygraph examination, and psychological screening.

Written responses are required for every application beyond the standard job application form. So interested applicants should plan an adequate amount of time to respond to the questionnaire in the application packet.

Applications will continue to be received and reviewed until the job is filled.
