Rain Threat Not Stopping Weekend Events

For the third year in a row, everyone is invited to Sweet Combs of Honey in Lavonia on Saturday, December 16, not so much to buy Christmas gifts, but to remember those loved ones we’ve lost and to pray for our country.

Owner LaDonna Andrews started the candlelight remembrance vigil in 2020 shortly after opening her store in its new location.

Andrews said this year the Night of Hope will focus on praying for the economy and world events.

The service she said the Night of Hope will begin at 7p in front of the Sweet Combs of Honey store on West Avenue.

Again, the event takes place on Saturday, December 16 and it is free and open to the public.

Sweet Combs of Honey is located on Highway 59 in downtown Lavonia across from Novus Glass.

A couple of other event reminders for this weekend.

First on Saturday, a special fun fundraiser is Saturday at the Royston Public Library.

The Friends of the Royston Library are hosting a Winter FUNderland from 10a to 2p at the library to help raise money for their Summer Reading Program.

The event includes games, crafts, and other activities for the kids and a special visit from the Grinch, as well as a gingerbread house contest.

Beginning today, adults will be able to view many items going up for a silent auction and place their bids.

Winners of the silent auction will be announced Saturday.

And it’s not Christmas without the annual Montevideo Christmas parade in Elbert County.

The parade takes place Sunday rain or shine beginning at 2p.

The annual parade, often referred to as the “Redneck Christmas Parade,” will begin at The Cannery and travel down Rock Branch Road ending at the Rock Branch Fire Department.

Over the years, the parade has included all kinds of participants, everything from cars to horses, to highly decorated floats to sheriff’s cars, wagons, Harley-Davidsons, four-wheelers, ambulances, antique cars, you name it.

There’s no entry fee for participants, you just show up,

The parade draws thousands of spectators each year so it is suggested those wishing to attend arrive early for a good parking spot and expect delays in leaving due to heavy traffic.
