Public Input Sought to Name New Franklin County Elementary School

Now that the new elementary school in Franklin County is under construction, it is time to come up with a new name.

The new school is replacing Royston Elementary School and is located on Highway 145 between Carnesville and Royston.

So it will not be called Royston Elementary School and there is already a Carnesville Elementary School.

At last week’s called Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Melanie Burton-Brown said they are asking the public to submit suggestions for a name.

“We would like to invite the community in the process of naming the new elementary school. So, a survey will be posted on our website and all of our social media platforms soon. And stakeholders will have an opportunity to make suggestions regarding the name of the new school,” she told the School Board.

Burton-Brown said once the survey period closes the suggestions will be sent to the Royston Elementary School staff.

“After the survey closes, those suggestions will be shared with the Royston Elementary School staff since those will be the folks who will be in that (new) building,” she explained. “We will ask the staff to narrow that list to the top three to five choices. And they will submit those choices to you, Board members. And the Board of Education will make the final selection.”

Board members asked if they could also submit name suggestions and Burton-Brown said it will be up to the school board to determine the name so they would be allowed to do that.

A link to the survey will be posted on the school system’s Facebook page and on their website.

Burton-Brown did not say when the deadline to suggest a name would be.
