Majestic Eagle Sculpture Replaces Fountain in Lavonia

The Eagle has landed…in Lavonia.

If you have driven down Highway 17 through Lavonia this week you may have seen a new eagle sculpture where a fountain used to be.

Reviews on the WLHR Facebook page have been mixed with some saying they would have liked the fountain to remain while others said they like the eagle sculpture.

The eagle sculpture was donated to the City some years ago and has been in storage while city fathers looked for a place to put it.

Initially, the City had planned to put it in Lavonia City Park.

But at their December City Council meeting, City Manager Charles Cawthon said the “birthday cake” fountain had developed some structural problems that were not worth fixing.

The eagle was put into place Monday afternoon and rests on a black pedestal which will have a wrought iron fence around it and landscaping.

Cawthon said Sterling Construction out of Royston was awarded the project.

The cost to tear down the fountain and replace it with the Eagle sculpture he said is $39-thousand dollars, which does not include the landscaping.

That money had been budgeted into the General Fund for 2021 and other monies are coming out of revenue from the hotel/motel tax.
