Madison County Man Dies in Camper Fire

A Madison County man was found dead in his camper late Friday night after firefighters arrived to extinguish a fire that was burning the home.

According to a report in the Athens-Banner Herald, Madison County Sheriff’s Capt. Jimmy Patton said Monday that the death of the 69-year-old remains under investigation, but it appears it may be from smoke inhalation.

The body was sent for an autopsy, he said.

The cause of the fire is also under investigation, but there appears to be no foul play and may have been electrical in nature, according to Patton.

A deputy arrived about 11 p.m. to find volunteer first responders attempting to extinguish the fire, according to the incident report.

The camper was located off Morgan Road, a rural area located a couple of miles northwest of the city of Ila.

A nearby resident told the deputy that the victim lived alone in the camper.
