Local NGTC Students Make Showing at SkillsUSA Competition

Students in a variety of study programs at North Georgia Technical College, including students from Lavonia, Martin, and Toccoa, made a strong showing at the recent Georgia State SkillsUSA competition held in March, claiming first place in five categories and second and third places in ten others.

This year, 40 students from 15 programs at the college competed and a total of 26 medals were won.

Placing second in their competitions were Ashley Jordan of Martin in CNC Turning Technology, and Daniel Rico of Lavonia in Electrical Construction Wiring.

Coming in third in their respective competitions were  the Welding Fabrication team consisting of Nikolaus Adams of Eastanollee, Kevin Cyr of Gainesville, and Blake Nelms of Royston.

And the Crime Scene Investigation team consisting of Selena Forrester of Hartwell also came in  third.

The contests are planned by technical committees made up of representatives of labor and management in the industries and are designed to test the skills needed for a successful entry-level performance in given occupational fields. Safety practices and procedures – an area of great concern to labor and management alike – are judged and graded and constitute a portion of a contestant’s score.

NGTC will be sending five first place winners to Kansas City, Missouri, June 23-27, for the 50th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference.

SkillsUSA is a national career and technical student organization with chapters at high schools and colleges across the country.
