Today is Arbor Day in Georgia, officially.

While National Arbor Day is celebrated in April, Georgia celebrates Arbor Day on the third Friday in February because it is the ideal time to plant trees in our state.

Arbor Day is a day set aside for schools, civic clubs, and other organizations, as well as individuals, to reflect on the importance of trees in our state and across our nation.

Local municipalities and counties are allowed to set their own day in February to celebrate Arbor Day.

This week at the Royston City Council meeting, Royston Mayor Keith Turman read an Arbor Day Proclamation designating Arbor Day in Royston on Friday, February 23.

The proclamation passed unanimously.

But while Royston’s Arbor Day is Friday, February 23, City Manager Sharleen Ayers told the Council and Mayor the official tree planting will take place in April.

Again, Royston’s tree planting takes place on April 26 at the Royston Community and Wellness Park at a time to be announced later and the public is invited.
