Local Animal Shelters to Participate in Weekend Adopt-a-Thon

Perhaps adopting a puppy or kitten has been on your mind.

Many people wait until school is out or almost out so their family can have the summer to bond with their new furry family member.

Then you will want to head up to the Anderson Petsmart Saturday for their weekend adop-a-thon.

Beginning today, representatives from a number of area pet rescue groups and humane societies will be on hand with lots of different puppies, kittens, dogs and cats to choose from.

Among them will be the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter and the Hart County Humane Society.  Humane Society President Donna Madkiff said all of the adoptable animals will be ready for their new homes.

“We will be there Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and Sunday,” Madkiff said. “There will be other groups there as well including the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter, Anderson County Humane Society and on Sunday, the Washington-Wilkes County Shelter will be joining us. All of the dogs and cats up for adoption will have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, healthy, and ready to go.”photo-4 photo-3

In addition to your new pet, those who adopt this weekend at Petsmart will also receive other items to take home.

“All adoptors go home with a generous book of coupons to help them get their new pet settled into their new home,” Madkiff said. “Petsmart really tries to get rescued animals out of shelters and into new homes.”

Shelters who participate in Petsmart’s adopt-a-thon event also receive a donation from Petsmart for every animal they adopt out.

That money Donna says is used to provide veterinary care for their foster dogs and cats.  This weekend adopt-a-thon at Petsmart in Anderson begins this afternoon and will run through Sunday.
