Lavonia Police to Host Citizens Firearm Academy Next Month

Looking for a way to kick off June with a bang?

The Lavonia Police Department is hosting the 2024 Citizens’ Firearm Academy on June 1.

Lavonia Police Captain Mike Smith says the Academy will cover Georgia gun laws as well as when and where it’s appropriate to carry a firearm.

And even though Georgia is an open-carry state, there are still places where you are not allowed to have a firearm.

They include bars, courthouses, jails, or prisons, as well as places of worship unless they permit it.

They are also not allowed within 150 ft of any active polling place, except for security personnel, and state mental health facilities.

Smith said the class is primarily geared towards new gun owners but he said all gun owners are welcome.

You must bring your own firearm and at least 50 rounds of ammunition, and your firearm needs to be .38 caliber and up. Space is limited so if interested now is the time to sign up.

If you are interested in signing up, you can stop by the Lavonia Police Department (Mon.-Fri. 7 AM-3 PM) at 851 Grogan St. or email us at [email protected] for an application.
