Lavonia Police Department Hiring

The call is out from the Lavonia Police Department for an additional police officer.

Chief Shane Edmisten announced this week they are hiring for one position.

The opening comes as the result of a recent $250,000 grant the Department received from the US Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services or COPS program awarded to the Lavonia Police Department last month.

Edmisten said the grant will allow him to hire two officers.

Their award is part of the 334 million dollars awarded to law enforcement departments across the country for new officers.

Edmisten said the grant will be awarded over three years.

He said Lavonia Mayor Courtney Umbehant and the City Council are strong public safety supporters and want to ensure the department has the resources required to be the best in the State of Georgia.

This is a matching grant and the City will be working to provide the necessary funds, which the Chief said will likely mean a budget amendment next year.

Chief Edmisten said the successful candidate will be a POST-certified law enforcement officer who wants to work for a city and community that supports law enforcement.

Benefits he said on social media include 12-hour shifts, insurance benefits, a 20-year retirement package, and more.
