Lavonia Conducting Annual Flushing of Water Lines

The City of Lavonia has begun a citywide flushing of its water lines this week.

Crews began flushing the lines on Tuesday and will continue through October 15th.   City manager Gary Fesperman said this is a routine event required by the State.

“Each year the City has to do a water flushing program,” Fesperman said. “This is a requirement of the Environmental Protection Division of the Department of Natural Resources.  This allows us to check all of the fire hydrants to make sure they’re fully functional and secondly, it flushes any water sitting in a dead-end line, flushing it through and getting fresh water into the system.”

During the process of flushing the water lines, Fesperman said customers should not be alarmed if they see some discoloration in their tap water.

“Anytime you do a flushing program, you can expect some discolored water. What that is is a little bit of sediment that has built up in the pipes. Whenever you increase the flow int he pipe, some breaks off and is sent through the lines. It’s not unsanitary, it’s just a little discoloration and it will subside within a couple of days,” Fesperman said.

Fesperman said you can also get rid of the discoloration by letting your cold water tap run for several minutes until the water runs clear.   Anyone with questions or concerns about the flushing process may contact the Lavonia Water Department.
