HCHS SkillsUSA Students Bring Home State Championships, Medals

Two state championships and seven medals in total are coming home to Hart County after the SkillsUSA Georgia Leadership and Skills Conference on February 22-24 in Atlanta.

Led by Hart College and Career Academy drafting instructor Vicky Carter and computer science instructor Rob Elliot, 22 Hart County High School students attended the conference which is one of the largest hands-on workforce development events in the state.

At the conference, students competed in a variety of technical and skill-based contests against 3,500 of the best students from across Georgia. In addition to Vicky Carter and Rob Elliot, Hart County High School SkillsUSA advisors who help students prepare for
competition includes Tyler Floyd, Bryan Martin, Erica Robertson, and Natasha Osborne.

“I have seen firsthand the hard work our SkillsUSA students and instructors have displayed in preparation of the state conference, and that hard work is paying off with medals and state championships,” Hart College and Career Academy CEO Steve Burton said. “I am extremely proud of all our students who competed, and I am very grateful for our dedicated instructors who spend countless hours helping students prepare to be successful. SkillsUSA competitions are a great way to give students hands-on
experience in the career fields they have been studying in the Hart College and Career Academy.”

Hart County High School captured state championships in two categories – Promotional Bulletin Board and Technical Drafting. Lyzsania Badillo (11th grade), Emily Reno (12th grade), and Destiney Hamby (9th grade) competed as a team and earned first place in Promotional Bulletin Board, a competition in which students create a bulletin board display based on the annual SkillsUSA competition theme that promotes
SkillsUSA, career and technical education in general, and related occupational information.

Gabe Hill (12th grade) earned first place in the Technical Drafting competition, which focuses on the solution of industry-developed problems by applying appropriate technical drafting skills and tools including computer-aided drafting (CAD).

The SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference will be held on June 24-28 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
