2011 Adoptathon1The Hart County Humane Society is joining other animal rescue groups this weekend for Petsmart’s weekend Adopt-a-thon.

It’s called the Save a Homeless Pet National Adoption weekend and Petsmart stores in Georgia and South Carolina are taking part.

Hart County Humane Society president Donna Madkiff said this is a great time for people to come out and find their new furry family member.

Madkiff said her group will be at the Anderson Petsmart on Clemson Blvd beginning today.

All of the dogs and cats will have already been spayed or neutered and will be current on their vaccinations.

Donna says she has a number very cute dogs her group will have available. And she says they can always use volunteers this weekend to help with the animals.

“Anyone who would like help out this weekend with walking dogs and being an advocate for the animals is welcome to join us,” Madkiff said. “We can always use the extra help.”

Every year, an estimated 7 million pets enter U.S. shelters.  Nearly 3 million never find homes, according to the Petsmart Charities Web site.

Jim and Janice Dougherty, the founders of PetSmart®, created PetSmart Charities® as a nonprofit animal welfare organization that saves the lives of homeless pets.

Today, PetSmart Charities’ goal is to end pet homelessness for good.

So far, they have helped more than 6 million pets find forever homes, according to their Web site.

This weekend’s adoption event begins today and runs through Sunday at Petsmart stores throughout Georgia and South Carolina.
