Gumlog Man Charged in South Carolina With Grand Larceny

A Gumlog man is charged in Oconee County, SC with Grand Larceny after he allegedly took a $2,500 diamond engagement ring from a home where he was doing renovations.

According to South Carolina Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jimmy Webb, it happened back in April.

In the incident report, on April 26, the victim called the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office to report that her engagement ring had been stolen from inside her home on Revolutionary Dr in West Union.

The victim stated that she had hired Murdock’s Landscaping and Home Management LLC to perform some repairs in her upstairs bathroom.

The business owner, Mike Murdock, and his assistant 26-year-old Zachary Butler were in the victim’s home from Saturday, April 22 through Monday, April 24th.

The homeowner said on April 25 she noticed her engagement ring, which she kept in a caddy in the upstairs bathroom was missing.

She told deputies that she and her husband took the sink apart to ensure it had not fallen into the drain.

She then called the Mike Murdock to report the missing property, and the owner stated that he would talk to his employee.

The victim then called to file a police report.

She described the missing engagement ring as a 1.79 ct. white gold and diamond, princess cut center stone with two princess cut side stones, with an approximate retail value of $2500.00.

While completing this report, the victim called the Sheriff’s Office and stated that Mr. Murdock had contacted her and had returned her ring to her.

He had also provided her with the name of the suspect.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s office then took Zach ary Dewain Butler of Gumlog Road, Martin into custody.

He was later transported to the Oconee County, SC detention Center where he was arrested and charged with Grand Larceny.

Watt said Butler will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device, as a condition of bond, should he be released.

Oconee County, SC Sheriff’s office is continuing the investigation.
